American Wood Duck Drake in Eclipse Plumage

One of my favorite‘s Wood Duck gallery despite the subject is in post-breeding molt. I just love the symmetrical head-on shot. It’s looking at the camera with colorful bill and bloody-red eyes still presented.

That’s White Rock lake’s American Wood Duck Drake in Eclipse Plumage. See the head, cheek and chest feathers thinned out and their bright nuptial colors turned dull and the iconic fancy “helmet” is gone. Here’s a drake in breeding plumage.
