On an occasion shooting a flock of four long-billed dowitchers at Village Creek, i noticed one of the bird bent the bill in an odd way, the tip of the upper mandible flexed upwards in a flash then back to normal.

Did that just happen?

It did and I actually captured shorebird’s unique feeding mechanism calls Rhynchokinesis – the ability of some shorebirds flexing upper mandible upwards or downwards, functions like forcep to grasp worms buried deep in the mudflat.
