Numerous reports on large flock of wood storks making their way inland weeks ago, and a group of 50 birds are roosting at Richland Chambers Reservoir north unit wetlands, just an hour south of Dallas city. I made my first trip there last week and surprised to see so many wading birds and wondered why i never set foot there before?
What a mistake.
There are thousands of wading birds and just south of wetland area house a huge colony of rookery at Carroll lake. For bird photographer reference, you can definitely get good shots of the birds in nice backdrop as the colony seat low on the lake. (if you hate plain sky for background likes me).
Rosetta Spoonbill and American White Pelican are among the visitors.
Ok, back to the Wood Stork.
The North America’s only native stork perch high on bald tree about 60 feet up but if you try there are opportunity to get one in flight with nice green foliage to boost. The wetland is huge, but you will find most of the birds at and further south to the narrow Carroll lake near 287. Bright and early in the morning would be good time to get the storks before they head to the beds feeding.
